Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything else.
Library day is lots of fun. Once a week Mr. Richmond and I get to take our girls down to the library. In Mozambique we feel very fortunate to have a library at the children's centre. Relative to a Canadian school library, this is the smallest library I've ever seen. Here in Mozambique however, this small library is of great value, importance and luxury. Many children here don't own a single book so library books can be quite exiting to flip through.
Many of the books in our library in Mozambique were purchased with funds donated by Canadians. It's quite exciting to open a book in the library and see the stamp "donated by Iris Ministries Canada". We are so grateful for the love and generosity of Canadians.
Sometimes the books allow us to escape into another world with children. They allow us to momentarily escape our living circumstances, the poverty that surrounds us, and set our imagination free to dream. Sometimes the books teach us about character. Other times the books make us laugh and giggle. Books seem to abound with an unmatchable potential to dream, escape, love and explore.
-Do you have old books lying around your house? Can you think of another child who could benefit from receiving one of your books? Why not pass on a special book for a friend in your class to enjoy.
-Is there a book fair where you could donate your books? Elmdale Public School holds an exiting bookfest every year in Ottawa that is always looking for old books.
